Friends from their youth, these three main Flemish Expressionists were supported and promoted by the influential Brussels galleries Sélection and Le Centaure. During the interwar years (1918-1940), they became the pioneers and frontrunners of Expressionism in Belgium. Permeke was a painter of rural life, while De Smet depicted folk themes and Van den Berghe added metaphysical and surreal elements to his work. This book highlights the differences and similarities between the three artists.
